Emergent’s Environmental Graphic Design
Other Involved Parties: DBI Architects, Davis Construction
After working with one of DC’s elite Project Designers & Directors, Michael Boyer, on a feature wall for DBI Architects’ headquarters in Washington, DC, he reached out to us to collaborate on signage and environmental graphics for a prominent client. After a few preliminary and comprehensive meetings with DBI and the client, Emergent, a design package to fit the vision of the space perfectly was developed and implemented.
Based on the magnitude of the project, the client decided to divide it into three phases. Phase one included experimental way-finding graphics in which each quadrant of each floor sported a color-coded wall. Each wall graphic featured images of scientists, inventors, and educators.
SUI Creative designed various patterns based on the work for which Emergent is known. We narrowed down to one very stylized pattern representing “Antibodies”. From this, we created two very unique displays utilizing this design.
The millwork wall in the elevator lobby boasts a display of the “Antibodies” pattern made of custom-cut and colored acrylic pieces. The pattern was oversized to work with the size of the wall. The other display became part of a large feature wall in the reception area which spans almost thirty feet from floor to ceiling. To match the architect specified 3form® material, we used clear acrylic and a very versatile material known as PolyPerm. The result was a stunning accent to the display, custom-made and designed by SUI, that complements the Director’s vision of the feature wall.
Additionally, custom wall graphics that cover sound proofing walls, as well as custom fabricated signage (elevator lobby sign, reception lettering, workstation and office signage) were designed by our team to bring the various facets of the space together.
After demonstrating our passion and determination for the client’s project, we were brought back for Phase 2, currently in design development.
Jeffrey Tibbs, LEED AP ID+C (Superintendent at Davis Construction): I have had SUI on multiple projects over the past 5 years and have found their office, as well as install techs, to be top-notch at communicating and coordinating with us. They have a passion for quality and produce an awesome end-product.
Michael Boyer, IIDA, LEED AP (Director at DBI Architects): DBI has successfully worked with SUI on many past projects. The most recent, Emergent BioSolutions (EBSI) new headquarters was no exception. Through an extensive design process, SUI creatively married together DBI’s vision of the space with EBSI values and brand. As a team, DBI and SUI created a branding package that maintained the level of corporate professionalism that EBSI required while infusing their scientific brand into all aspects of this project. All signage, graphics, and branding were deeply rooted within the scientific culture that makes up who EBSI is as a company.
Maria Cornelius LEED AP (Davis Construction): Working with Signs Unlimited continues to be a pleasure. Their proactive approach is refreshing and their quality of work is outstanding. And most importantly, their team does not stop working until the end-user is completely satisfied with the install.
