History
Way back in 1971, the industry was quite different. Our Founder, Lloyd A. Kaufman, moved to the DC area from Long Island, NY, where he was a young, go-getting, and experienced salesman in the sign industry. After pursuing the same type of position with several long-time and well-established signage companies in the Washington, DC market, it was quickly realized their client base was so strong an additional salesman was unnecessary. Undeterred by what seemed to be a saturated market, he defied the odds by creating Signs Unlimited, and he did it by offering superior service and products. In 1981, the business was incorporated and became Signs Unlimited, Inc. Upon moving to Alexandria, Virginia in late 1997, the business name “SUI, Inc.” came into use.
Over the years, SUI has collaborated with a broad client base. Our clients have ranged from property development companies, architectural and interior design firms, graphic design companies, and general contractors. Some of our most enjoyable and passionate projects have been from collaborating directly with the client, whether it be a small business or a large corporation.
Mr. Kaufman has turned over the day-to-day operations to his three sons; Micah, Jared, and Josh, all who have diverse skills and interests. Micah, having a strong business sense and an intense new vision for the company, took over business development and is now Managing Partner. Jared’s extensive knowledge of fabrication and years of experience with installation led him to become Production & Installation Manager. His primary responsibility is to ensure a positive client experience by guaranteeing a quality final product and installation. Josh, who always had a creative side, dove into the design side of the business, and with a strong need for someone to manage the infrastructure and IT assets, he also took the lead in not just managing this side of the business, but also redesigning and restructuring it to become an extremely stable IT infrastructure. Today, he oversees the infrastructure of the business.
As technology and trends have evolved in the signage/graphics industry so has SUI. During SUI’s formative years there was a diversity to the work that included interior signage, directory boards, way-finding, architectural, and exterior signage. We combine this extensive background with innovative thinking and design to form SUI Creative. SUI Creative pushes forward beyond typical signage work and into graphic projects that bring together a client’s brand, messaging, and space.
SUI Creative intends to keep growing it’s diverse portfolio of work. In line with our vision for expanding the company, we have brought on a variety of talented professionals to focus on environmental/experimental graphic design, fabrication, and implementation. Since 2014, we have become the go-to company for numerous architecture firms, general contractors, and individual corporations for their EGD needs. Having nearly 45 years of background in the industry and continuously having talented and dedicated experts with diverse skill-sets on our team sets us apart from other companies in our industry. And we plan to keep it that way for the next half-century.
